The film is modern twist on Frankenstein and a psychological thriller bordering on a horror movie. Antonio Banderas is back in the flesh and better than ever and I thoroughly enjoyed and was a bit disturbed by the film. Black and Latino men are usually stopped and frisked, nine times as often, some on a daily basis. Marijuana was decriminalized in 1977. Minor marijuana possession charges require public view, once someone is stopped and asked to empty their pockets anything they have in their pockets, including marijuana is now in ‘public view.’ 57 of 126 cases on docket on a single court day was for marijuana. Police aren’t supposed to reach into people’s pockets to look for drugs and they can’t legally force people to empty their pockets. “The paperwork” doesn’t indicate these popular stop and frisk methods. Reporter asked why don’t cops ‘Stop and Frisk’ in Park Slope or Brooklyn Heights? Legal aid lawyer said “they’d never do it those areas, because there’s not that many Black and Latino kids there, the community would be up in arms and the community’s a powerful community.”

It quite literally means to put firmly a position. So if you’ve done no exploration, haven’t lived your life, took risks, took a journey or an adventure, how are you really ‘settling down’….at age 20-something? You’ve been settled this whole entire time. One word. AMAZING. The movie takes place in South London, where a bunch of up to no good teenage boys have to battle aliens to protect their block. The tagline ‘Inner City Meets of Outer Space’ is so central to the movie’s theme because the setting plays to the movie’s true to reality charm.

After killing the first alien, they triumphantly carry the carcass around the neighborhood only to find there are more, way more. Armed with fireworks, bats, swords, knives, bikes, clever one-liners and their brave leader, Moses, played by John Boyega, they make it their mission to kill them. Through a cast of relatable characters the story unfolds into a night with so many twists and turns, and unexpected outcomes you can’t help but laugh out loud, squeal, and thoroughly enjoy yourself. The film is considered ‘low budget’ by Hollywood’s standards but it blows most of these big budget green lighters out of the water.

It starts off with a mugging and I thought it was going to be another banal racially charged storyline but I was wrong. It had the perfect mix of social commentary, coming of age, action, adventure and human compassion. In such a limited amount of time and with such a sizable cast, the character development was evolved and the storyline was practical and true to the life of a South Londoner. It’s been a very long time since I actively enjoyed a movie experience and this is one not to be missed.

Check out Starr’s interview with lead actor John Boyega here

During the Atlantic Slave Trade, 9.4 to 12 million people from North, West, West-Central and South-east Africa survived transportation to arrive in the Western Hemisphere as slaves, most going to Brazil. The similarities between slaves in the United States mirrors slaves in other parts of the Americas. The history is the same. The only difference was the colonizers. The conquistadors came to the new world some with slaves from Africa, the (American) English imported slaves. Others enslaved the indigenous populations in and ended having to export slaves because the disease they brought killed off the native population.

People of African origin first arrived in the Americas with the Spanish and Portuguese in the 15th and 16th centuries. Those who were directly from Africa mostly arrived in Latin America as part of the Atlantic slave trade, as agricultural, domestic, and menial laborers and as mineworkers. They were also employed in mapping and exploration and were even involved in conquest. They were mostly brought from West Africa and Central Africa. Most of the slaves were sent to Brazil, and the Caribbean, but lesser numbers went to Colombia and Venezuela.

The regions with the highest population of Latinos of Black African ancestry today are Brazil , Colombia, Dominican Republic ,Cuba and Puerto Rico.

An Afro-Latin American (also Afro-Latino) is a Latin American person of at least partial Black African ancestry; the term may also refer to historical or cultural elements in Latin America thought to emanate from this community. The term can refer to the mixing of African and other cultural elements found in Latin American society such as religion, music, language, the arts and social class.

The term Afro-Latin American, as used in this article refers specifically to black African ancestry and not to European colonial or Afro-Arab ancestry, such as white South African or Arab Moroccan ancestry. The term is not widely used in Latin America outside of academic circles. Normally Afro Latin Americans are called “black”

I am Black Latino and I have deeply felt this population of people have been invisible for so long. This Diaspora docu-series explores the history and present attitudes of race, color, self Identification and social interaction among Latinos from Latinos themselves. The doc aims to unite. Through interviews, research, authentic slice of life interviews and a journey through several Latin America countries, my aim is to shed truth and light about how the rich Latino culture came to exist and flourish; how pigmentation shapes attitudes and has fostered discord. Finally, it is to offer insight into a present and future united global community.

What would you like to know about the Diaspora in Latin America?
